Sometimes in life, and especially on vacation, the journey is its own reward. This is especially true in Switzerland!
The train ride on the Luzern-Interlaken Express is a perfect example, linking two spectacular destinations. Passing through UnTours’ Swiss Heartland villages, it also happens to take in some of the country’s most impressive Alpine panoramas, turquoise lakes, and numerous waterfalls along the way.
Luzern and Interlaken are two of Switzerland’s most popular destinations and cities UnTourists will visit. However, the most beautiful part is the route that connects them: climbing on board in Central Switzerland, sitting back and relaxing, arriving in the Jungfrau region duly impressed by breathtaking scenery.
The trip takes 2 hours. En route, the premium panoramic train passes by five crystal clear mountain lakes as well as several waterfalls and rivers. Shortly after Giswil, the train switches to cog drivetrain technology and winds its way up to the Brünig Pass.
After the descent it arrives at Brienz, a lovely UnTours village and popular starting point
for boat cruises on Lake Brienz. Also well worth visiting is the open-air Ballenberg Museum, which includes over 100 historic farm buildings gathered from around Switzerland. Entrance to this fascinating museum, an UnTours favorite, is free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
To get more out of this epic Swiss rail trip, download the LiveGuide app of the Zentralbahn. The app provides passengers with interesting information about the region. Thanks to the map view, the movement of the train along the route can be followed in real time. With precise Swiss timing, push notifications inform guests about the next highlight just before it comes.
The Luzern-Interlaken Express is the first section of the Golden Pass Line, which continues from Interlaken to Montreux. This section is also part of the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland. The route can be enjoyed year round and is free for Swiss Travel Pass holders.
It runs every hour, and more than a dozen times daily. Depending on the time of day, a bistro coach may be in operation, so guests can enjoy dining with a view.
