Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Bergen, Norway
Your journey begins in Bergen, a city steeped in history and surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Once you’ve settled into your centrally located hotel, the day is yours to explore. Stroll along the historic Nordnes peninsula or step back in time at Håkon’s Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower, for a little Renaissance history. Don't miss the 12th-century St. Mary’s Church, known locally as Mariakirken, a stunning example of Romanesque architecture. If daylight lingers, ride the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen to marvel at the sweeping views of Bergen’s harbour and the surrounding fjords. A perfect start to your Norwegian adventure.
Day 2: All aboard!
After a relaxed breakfast, you'll head to the MS Trollfjord, your floating home for the week ahead. Settle into your cabin or suite before meeting the Coastal Experience Team, who will guide you through enriching lectures and curated activities throughout your journey.
As the ship departs Bergen and glides into Hjeltefjord, take a moment to toast the start of your adventure in the elegant, two-story 1893 Bar. Enjoy the camaraderie of fellow travellers and the ever-changing views of Norway’s dramatic coastline as your voyage begins.
Day 3: Perfect Panoramas in Molde
Molde, known as the City of Roses, offers sweeping views and rich cultural experiences. Hike to the Varden viewpoint for breathtaking panoramas. Gaze at the town from above at the height of 1319 feet above sea level and admire the 222 snowy peaks across Moldefjord.
If you opt not to hike, explore the Romsdal Museum, one of Norway's largest folk museums. For an iconic Norwegian experience, opt for an excursion along the Atlantic Road, a stunning coastal route often seen on the big screen of Hollywood films.
Day 4: The Ancient Fishing Town of Rørvik
This sprawling chain of 6,000 islands, islets, and skerries is steeped in maritime heritage and natural beauty. In Rørvik, visit the Norwegian Coastal Museum to uncover tales of seafarers and cod fishing, a tradition celebrated with an annual festival. On Inner-Vikna, the largest island, ancient burial mounds hint at a deep history. Winter brings an abundance of cod—don’t miss the chance to sample freshly made cod cakes, a local favourite.
Day 5: Village Life and Fjords of Lødingen
Nestled on the southwestern shore of Hinnøya, Norway’s largest island south of Svalbard, Lødingen is a tranquil village of just under 2,000 residents. Stroll the port's streets, where traditional red fishing huts reflect its maritime heritage. The serene beauty of the nearby Gullesfjord, bordered by dramatic mountain ranges, showcases the natural allure that defines Norway’s coastline.
Optional excursions let you deepen your experience: fish with a local, discover Sámi culture and history, or explore Dampskipsbrygga, the village’s historic wharf. Whether on foot or joining an activity, Lødingen invites you to savour its unique blend of nature and tradition.
Day 6: Alta, the Gateway to the Northern Lights
Nestled at 70 degrees north, Alta offers a rich blend of culture, history, and Arctic magic. Known for its exceptional salmon fishing on the Alta River and as a prime spot for witnessing the Northern Lights, this town is a highlight of your journey. On a clear night, the auroras may dance overhead, creating unforgettable memories.
Optional excursions let you dive deeper: visit the Northern Lights Cathedral, home to a fascinating aurora exhibition, or explore the Alta Museum with its UNESCO-listed prehistoric rock carvings. For a unique Arctic experience, tour the world’s northernmost ice hotel, where even the bar and glasses are sculpted from ice.
Day 7: The Northernmost Point of Honningsvåg
Honningsvåg, the northernmost city on the mainland, offers an unforgettable Arctic experience with its snow-covered landscapes and winter activities. Strap on snowshoes for a hike across the plains or try ice fishing, a beloved local tradition. Taste the region’s king crab, freshly caught in the Barents Sea, and admire local art at the Once Upon a Dream gallery or visit the historic Honningsvåg Church, built in 1885.
The highlight of this day is a visit to the North Cape, the northernmost point of mainland Europe. Reached by snowmobile in winter, you’ll stand at the edge of the Arctic, gazing out over the Barents Sea under the polar night sky. The iconic globe monument is the perfect spot for photos, before warming up inside North Cape Hall to learn about life in the High Arctic. As the evening sets in, you’ll sail southward, completing the northernmost part of your journey.
Day 8: The Arctic Capital of Tromsø
Arrive in Tromsø, the “Capital of the Arctic,” and bid farewell to the MS Trollfjord. After checking into your hotel, enjoy a leisurely afternoon in this historic Arctic city. Explore the waterfront, home to the world’s northernmost aquarium, Polaria, or visit the striking Arctic Cathedral with its stunning stained-glass mosaics. Tromsø also boasts plenty of local shops, restaurants, and cafes, including Mack Brewery and Ølhallen pub, where you can unwind after a day of exploration.
