Pernes-les-Fontaines, France - Provence, Home of Alcaraz
As its name suggests, Pernes-les-Fontaines is a town of fountains. The 30-odd fountains scattered throughout the town – varying in size, design and condition – were mostly installed in the late eighteenth century and can be seen as part of a trail that encompasses all of the fountains as well as the town’s historic legacy.
In addition to the fountains, you can walk into the old town center through the fifteenth-century fortified gateway. Trace the remains of the city ramparts. Climb up to the top of the thirteenth-century Ferrande Tower to see frescoes from the period. Drop into the dungeon of the ruins of the ancient Chateau of the Counts of Toulouse. Take refuge under the eighteenth-century covered market, or just take a stroll and enjoy the beautiful town houses, dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Almost every turn through the old town of Pernes-les-Fontaines provides a glimpse of its historic wealth.
A sizeable town with more than 10,000 residents, Pernes-les-Fontaines has all the amenities – banks, bakeries, butcher, supermarkets and other shops – as well as its own outdoor market on Saturdays featuring locally grown produce. There are several well-regarded restaurants in town and the surrounding area..
Located at the northern end of the Vaucluse plateau, Pernes-les-Fontaines offers a wide variety of day-trip possibilities as close as 20 minutes away and as far as 1.5 hours. The Fontaine de Vaucluse, famed source of the Sorgue River, is 15 minutes away, the cities of Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and Nîmes are within a 1-hour drive. Smaller towns and villages like Arles, Orange, St. Rémy and Vaison-la-Romaine are within a 1-hour drive as well. Also, Gigondas, the natural beauty of the Luberon Mountains and villages, the world-famous wine villages of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and the Roman legacies are all easy day trips.
