Meet Jennifer Broome, a Denver-based travel and environmental journalist with a passion for sustainable tourism. As a broadcast meteorologist with over 30 years of experience, Jennifer blends her expertise in weather and storytelling to highlight outdoor adventures and eco-friendly travel for outlets like Conde Nast Traveler, Denver Post, and The Weather Channel. From trekking to Everest Base Camp to exploring U.S. National Parks, she’s dedicated to showcasing how travelers can connect with nature responsibly. We sat down with Jennifer to hear how her travels have evolved, why sustainable tourism matters to her, and what being an UnFluencer means in today’s travel world.
What is your personal concept of the kind of Slow Travel that makes a positive contribution to the world?
Mine is one of a dialogue for good by striking up conversations with locals in coffee shops, restaurants, bars, or shops. Those interactions often lead to great finds that are not over-touristed. Slow travel affords the opportunity to fully engage in a community and discover opportunities to help from simply shopping at an artisan store or gallery to lending a helping hand with a local non-profit. Engaging in-depth conversations with locals open up an entirely different travel experience and impact.
How do you see UnFluencer content (written, images, videos) differing from what you see from most travel content creators?
It goes beyond traditional tourist haunts. I particularly like the content of UnFluencer and UnGuide together in videos as it shows friendship versus traditional tourist and guide interaction.
How can UnFluencers be a part of destination management that preserves nature and culture?
Start with a destination tourism board to identify climate change impacts including game changers who are uniquely combating it with some success or positive change and to discover indigenous owned tourism related businesses. From there the conversations go deeper with those locally owned businesses on how best to partner with them and their community.
