When our clients take a Swiss Untour and need an extra night to accommodate their flight schedule, we recommend the Allegra Hotel, just outside of Zürich. The Allegra is considered an airport hotel (it offers free airport shuttle service, after all!) , but it also has easy access to the excellent galleries and museums (like the Kunsthaus and the Swiss National Museum) in Zürich.

In addition to its wonderful culture, Zürich is also renowned for its living conditions. According to a recent study by Mercer, an international consulting firm, Zürich ranks #2 in both categories of the company’s 2011 Quality of Living global survey: quality of living standards and personal safety. In the entire world, only Vienna has a higher living standard, only Luxembourg is safer.

From the Allegra, you catch a train in Zürich Main Station in under 15 minutes. When you get to the station, don’t forget to look up and say hello to the “Blue Angel,” she is there as a guardian angel protecting travelers on their train journeys.

And, if convenience isn’t enough of a reason to stay at the Allegra, here’s another one: much like Sally Field, people like it, right now, they like it. The Allegra has 4+ (out of 5) ratings on both Trip Advisor and Expedia. Besides being close to everything, you can save a bundle by staying here versus a hotel in downtown Zürich and you get complimentary WiFi in each room – perfect for you photophiles out there just waiting for a high-speed connection in Switzerland to upload your Pulitzer-worthy shots.

A LITTLE EXTRA: The name of the hotel – “allegra” – is certainly appropriate here because it actually means “welcome” in Rumantsch, Switzerland’s 4th national language.
