Edythe Salzmann and Jean Weisel take Untours with us nearly every year. This week they share the spotlight together as Untourists of the Week. We asked them for one picture. They sent four, and they were all so good, we couldn’t choose! Don’t they just look like the best of friends having the best of times? Tell us a little bit about your most recent Untour and why you chose that particular destination?
Edythe: We spent a week in Barcelona and a week in Madrid. We bike in Barcelona, went to the museums and got involved in a wonderful patron saint celebration…. huge puppet parade, fire breathing dragons, fire works, wine tastings etc. We walked and walked and had fun getting lost. In Madrid we lost ourselves in the local sights and especially loved the museums. We had biked in Portugal and always wanted to see Spain. I didn’t want to leave this life without visiting the Prado.
What is your favorite Untours memory?
Edythe: Hiking and biking in Switzerland, Alsace and Strasbourg, just living daily in whatever country we are in. Too many funny experiences to describe here. We love getting lost.
Jean: I could never pick one memory out of a multitude of good times. Some of the funniest were the times we got lost or forgot where we parked our bikes (amid hundreds). Just being able to plan each day with Plan A and B but always ready and able to change our minds made each day an adventure..
How is taking an Untour different from other ways of traveling?
Edythe: You settle in your “home”, get to know the local shops and shopkeepers, wonderful Untour guidebooks and you feel you have gotten to know, at least a bit, the way other people live.
Jean: Untours encourages independent travel while provinding information and direction which enhance the whole experience.. You also know that if something goes wrong , there is always someone to help you.
If you could describe an Untour in just 3 words, what would they be?
Edythe: Independent, relaxed, fun
Jean: Flexible, educational, pleasureable
