Tongass to Glacier Bay: Alaska's Deep Wild Cruise
Cruise differently in Alaska. Our most active expedition—hiking deep into the Tongass, paddling Glacier Bay and skiffing into glaciers that only small ships can reach.
Alaska doesn't do subtle and neither does this 7-night cruise. On board the Wilderness Legacy, this is our most active Alaska expedition, built for travelers who want to push a little further, stay out a little longer and come back with muddy boots and a story worth telling. From bushwhacking through the Tongass, the largest temperate rainforest on Earth, to paddling into Glacier Bay National Park and skiffing into the remote LeConte Glacier, where mega-ships simply can't follow, every day delivers something wilder than the one before.
Built on genuine respect for Alaska's wild and storied ecosystems, our expedition partner sources local food, serves only sustainable seafood and follows Leave No Trace practices throughout—while actively investing in the communities they visit. This is cruising reimagined.

Itinerary
Day 1 - Juneau, Alaska Embarkation
After arriving in Juneau, you will board the Wilderness Legacy just in time for a welcome beverage before dinner. The captain and crew will introduce themselves and provide an overview of the week’s adventure with a kickoff toast. Listen for the whistles as the Wilderness Legacy departs. These horns and whistles come from Captain Dan’s personal collection.
Meals included: Dinner
Day 2 - Robert & Crow
We offer bushwhacking (hiking off-trail), full-day hiking, skiff tours, forest pokes, and kayaking in this historic logging area with old-growth trees, remnants of logging cabins, and even a view of the Five Fingers Island Lighthouse.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 3 - LeConte Glacier
There is something in the water. The Legacy glides through a narrow waterway flanked by sheer cliffs, leading to LeConte Glacier, the southernmost tidewater glacier in the Northern Hemisphere that is rarely seen by visitors. Large cruise ships cannot access this remote corner of Alaska. Today, you choose your own adventure: skiff among towering icebergs or simply absorb the reverent silence. This is sacred ground for the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. Listen to the sounds of this place. You belong here today.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 4 - Thomas Bay, Land of Kushtaka
The anchor drops into the milky blue waters of Thomas Bay just as the summer sun breaks through the mist. You will hear Cascade Creek before you see it; a dramatic series of waterfalls crashing through the forest. This is a crew favorite and home to one of the few accessible trails in Southeast Alaska, with options for all skill levels, to reach a stunning waterfall or a hike deeper into the forest. When conditions allow, enjoy an open paddle on calm, glassy waters by kayak or paddle board.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 5 - Whale Watching & Kuiu Island
Welcome to black bear country. The west side of Kuiu Island hosts the densest population of these iconic creatures on Earth. As we explore its calm bays, you may spot sea otters, the smallest marine mammals, floating nearby, unbothered and adorable. Humpback whales hunt for herring here, and with luck, you will witness their bubble-net feeding. If the conditions permit, do not miss your chance to snorkel in the cold, nutrient-rich waters (we provide warm wetsuits). For those looking to stay a bit dryer, there are opportunities for hikes (including a hard charger bushwhack) and even an all-day paddle.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 6 - Chichagof Island
Today, we explore the wild coastline of Chichagof Island in search of the elusive coastal brown bear. This remote area is rich with life and offers some of the best bear-viewing opportunities in Southeast Alaska. Your captain and expedition leader will take you deep into bear territory using their expert local knowledge. Activities include shoreline walks, kayaking, skiff rides, and up-close (but safe) bear spotting from the water. This is a day of awe-inspiring encounters with nature at its most raw.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 7 - Glacier Bay National Park's Rarely Visited Outer Bay
Spanning 3.3 million acres, just slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut, Glacier Bay is vast. Most visitors only see a small part of it. But not you. You will venture into parts of the park that 99 percent of visitors never explore—we are one of the only companies that go to this area. Wildlife is abundant. Keep your eyes open for Steller sea lions and otters as you hike, walk, kayak, or skiff through untouched wilderness. If you’re looking for a relaxing activity, meadow walks may be offered as well. Back on board after a full day, your expedition team shares photos from the week, sent to you as a farewell gift.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Day 8 - Juneau, Alaska Disembarkation
Welcome back to Juneau. After a warm and satisfying breakfast, it is time to say goodbye to the crew as you disembark.
Meals included: Breakfast
Variations in itinerary, ship, and order of days may occur to maximize your experience
Excursions
All excursions are included, as outlined in the itinerary above.
What to expect: This is a very active, expedition-style cruise with daily opportunities for hiking, kayaking, small boat excursions, and hands-on exploration. Guests spend a good amount of time off the ship, engaging directly with nature rather than sightseeing. Each day offers a range of activity levels, so you can choose between more strenuous adventures or more relaxed options like scenic outings or time onboard.
Ship
Wilderness Legacy
The one-of-a-kind Legacy sails to the farthest reaches, spinning yarns of adventure along the way - like the crew and guests having the time of their lives. Notable features of this one-of-a-kind vessel include beautiful carved wooden cabinetry, a spacious Owner's Suite, and the Sea Dragon (a portable launch platform for kayaks and paddle boards). She is ready for exploration, and has the most spacious viewing decks in the fleet. Wherever she sails she announces her arrival with the blow of a whistle.
Four decks are ready for guests' comfort and adventure. The bridge deck provides room for sunning, two hot tubs, and the open bridge, as well as the highest of the bow viewing areas wrapping around the front. The upper deck provides the middle bow viewing area. The lounge deck provides the luxurious indoor lounge and bar as well as the largest of the three bow viewing areas. Downstairs on the main deck guests enjoy gourmet meals in the elegant dining room.
The Dining Room features open seating at set times. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served plated at table. Unlimited beverages, alcoholic and non, are included in the price of the cruise. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options are always available, and dietary restrictions are happily accommodated if noted in advance.
Onboard Amenities
Custom made sea dragon kayak launch platform; bow-mounted underwater camera; kayaks, paddleboards, inflatable skiffs, hiking poles; on-deck hot tubs; fitness equipment and yoga mats; DVD and book library. Wi-Fi (note: not available when we are within national parks, wildlife preserves, or other protected areas. These locations are chosen for their natural beauty and remote wilderness, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the experience).
The Legacy is the only boat in the fleet to offer an elevator. This elevator does not reach the bridge deck. While this makes her a comfortable choice for guests with mobility concerns, guests must still be able to embark and disembark via gangway and climb one flight of stairs. Explorer cabin 309 features a short ramp over the lip to get into the cabin and grab bars in the bathroom, but it is not ADA accessible.
