Savoir Vivre on France's Northern Burgundy Canal
Cruising through France
Step back in time as you journey along the peaceful Canal de Bourgogne, a 242 km waterway connecting the Yonne to the Saône, with 189 charming locks still manually operated, much as they were 250 years ago. As your barge makes its slow and graceful way through the French countryside, you’ll pass moss-covered locks, storybook villages, and scenic stretches of wheat and mustard seed fields.
Hop off for a walk or bike ride—your barge will catch up at the next lock, where friendly lock keepers still travel by scooter to greet the boat and guide it along. With stone churches, quirky lock houses, and the gentle rhythm of the water as your backdrop, this cruise invites you to unplug, unwind, and savor the slow beauty of Burgundy with gourmet meals, good company, and the simple joy of watching the world drift by. The term "Savoir Vivre" reflects a deep appreciation for the art of living well—a philosophy embodied by Captain Megret, who has piloted and cooked on these canals since 1989. With his extensive knowledge of the region’s history and wines, he ensures each voyage is fun, enriching, and comfortable.

Itinerary
Northern Burgundy Itinerary: Tanlay to Venarey-les-Laumes
Day 1 (Sunday): Welcome aboard and meet your crew!
Your captain will greet you in central Dijon in the late afternoon — either at the train station (with frequent, easy TGV service from Paris) or at a local hotel. From there, you’ll be comfortably chauffeured to the Savoir Vivre, moored in the peaceful canal port of Tanlay along the Canal de Bourgogne.
Once aboard, you’ll have time to settle into your cabin, relax, and take in your surroundings before the evening begins. Dinner tonight is at the charming Auberge La Beursaudière in the village of Nitry.
Day 2 (Monday): Tanlay to Lezinnes
Cruise gently along the Canal de Bourgogne to the village of Lézinnes. From there, you’ll head into the vineyards of Chablis for a private tasting with a local grower, sampling several vintages of these celebrated wines. Though the name is imitated worldwide, only wines from this region can truly be called Chablis.
Dinner this evening is at Le Maufoux in the heart of Chablis.
Day 3 (Tuesday): Lezinnes to Ancy-le-Franc
Enjoy breakfast on board with village-baked pastries, still warm from the oven, as you cruise through beautiful Burgundy countryside toward Ancy-le-Franc.
After lunch on board, you’ll visit the 16th-century Château d’Ancy-le-Franc, one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in the region, with interiors still furnished with remarkable original pieces.
Dinner this evening is at Le Saint-Père in Tonnerre.
Day 4 (Wednesday): Ancy-le-Franc to Ravieres
After a peaceful morning cruise, you’ll visit the splendid Abbaye de Fontenay, founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard. Beautifully preserved, the abbey offers a rare glimpse into the distinctive architecture and industrious spirit of the early Cistercian order.
Dinner this evening is at La Parenthèse.
Day 5 (Thursday): Ravieres to Montbard - Flavigny-sur-Ozerain
Few medieval villages are as delightfully fragrant as Flavigny-sur-Ozerain. Follow the sweet scent through its winding streets to the heart of the old Benedictine abbey — the only place where the famous Anis de Flavigny candies are still made today.
Inside, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the beauty of the abbey, colorful tins of sweets, and the gentle rhythm of the confectioners at work. Visiting Flavigny is also an opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful villages in France, rich with history and charm.
Dinner this evening is at La Cuisine de la Fontaignotte.
Day 6 (Friday): Montbard to Venarey-let-Laumes - Beautiful Beaune
After lunch on board, you’ll set out for enchanting Beaune, the wine capital of the Côte d’Or. The highlight here is the beautifully preserved Hospices de Beaune, a 15th-century charitable hospital that continued caring for patients into the early 20th century.
You’ll also have time to wander the shops or relax at a café in the main square before returning to the barge in the late afternoon.
Dinner this evening is at Régis Bolâtre’s charming Auberge du Cheval Blanc.
Day 7 (Saturday): A Sad Farewell
After breakfast, you will be chauffeured back to the designated drop-off point (Dijon Ville train station). We hope that your cruise on Savoir Vivre has created memories to last a lifetime!

Reviews
Here's what our guests have to say
J. Bissell, (6/2018 & 9/19)
"We wended our way at breakneck speed (2 kilometers/hour) through the beautiful French countryside… enjoyed fantastic cuisine and local wines… explored historic sites, wineries and farms… and quickly made friends with our amiable fellow travelers. Richard Megret, our captain, served as outstanding host, organizer, French ambassador, and friend. Along with Laura, our superb tour director and Justine, our wonderful hostess, this trio of professionals turned out to be essential partners in making this trip so memorable."
K. Jones
"Everything was remarkable, and we've been on two very good cruises before this one. We've now taken four UnTours apartment stays, in addition to the barge trip, and would continue to recommend you".
