St. Paul

Spacious 2-bedroom apartment in Marais district in Paris

Stay in Paris

The St. Paul apartment is a spacious, bright, high-ceilinged apartment in a 19th century building in the center of the Marais district. The apartment has two bedrooms, one with a queen and one with a double bed. The large open-plan living room/dining room has lounging and dining space for up to six persons. The TV has some English channels. The living room couch can convert to a double sofa bed if needed. The kitchen is a bit small, but is equipped with everything needed. The bathroom has a shower. The WC (toilet) is in a small, separate room.

This neighborhood is especially interesting. The Rue des Rosiers, the heart of Paris's historic Jewish community, is directly across the street. On that street you'll find Jewish restaurants, bookshops, bakeries, falafel shops, and synagogues. Otherwise, the Marais is known for its old architecture, eclectic shops, and stylish eateries. The Notre Dame is about a 15-minute walk away. The St. Paul metro station is about 5 minutes away.

Note that the pictures were taken using a wide-angle lens, making the rooms appear larger than they are.

Marais, France - Paris, Home of St. Paul

The word “marais” is French for “swamp,” exactly what this famous area of Paris used to be. Today luxurious seventeenth-century mansions or “hôtels particuliers” occupy its streets. Many of them have been converted into museums such as the Musée Carnavalet, which presents the history of Paris; the Musée Picasso, which houses the largest collection of Picasso's in the world; and the Musée Cognacq-Jay, which showcases an exquisite collection of eighteenth-century art and furniture. The district’s famous street, Rue des Rosiers, in the heart of the Jewish area, is teeming with delis, restaurants, and bakeries. Trendy shops and cafés line adjacent streets. The Place des Vosges, where Victor Hugo once lived, is a beautiful place to relax and people watch.

Outside the Marais, the rest of Paris awaits. Whether it’s a leisurely walk along the Seine, a visit to one of the countless museums, or an unforgettable meal in a cozy neighborhood restaurant, you’ll never find a shortage of things to do in this marvelous city. Even lingering in one of the meticulously kept gardens or sidewalk cafés can be a daylong activity. Everything is conveniently located, just a short walk from any Metro station, one of the safest and most efficient subway systems in the world.

If plans include travel outside Paris, the RER (regional train) can transport you quickly and economically. Day trips to the Versailles Palace, Disneyland Paris, Monet’s home in Giverny, and the Chartres cathedral are easily accomplished and well worth the trip.
