Carpentras, France - Provence, Home of Le Refuge Provençal des Vignes
Carpentras is a lively Provençal town with deep roots stretching back to Roman times, yet it still feels wonderfully down-to-earth. At its heart is a maze of narrow streets, shaded squares, and centuries-old fountains, perfect for wandering at a leisurely pace. The town is best known for its famous Friday market, one of the oldest and most colorful in Provence, where stalls overflow with olives, cheeses, spices, and fresh produce from the surrounding countryside. Carpentras also has a sweet side—don’t miss its candied fruit, a specialty here since the 14th century, or the chance to sip wines from the nearby Ventoux and Rhône Valley vineyards.
Surrounded by rolling hills and overlooked by the legendary Mont Ventoux, Carpentras makes an ideal base for exploring the best of Provence. Within a short drive, you can visit medieval villages like Venasque and Pernes-les-Fontaines, stroll the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, or step into the papal history of Avignon. Outdoor lovers will enjoy cycling or hiking in the Ventoux area, while food and wine enthusiasts will find endless opportunities to taste local specialties in nearby markets and wineries. Carpentras combines small-town charm with easy access to Provence’s iconic landscapes, offering both relaxation and discovery right at your doorstep.
