Leiden, Holland - Leiden, Home of Frans Hals
Leiden, a picturesque Dutch city of about 114,000, is located on a branch of the Rhine River, some 30 minutes southwest of Amsterdam. Laced with peaceful canals and gabled Dutch houses, Leiden is most famous for its university, which is the oldest and most renowned in the Netherlands. Leiden played an important role in Dutch history and in the development of Dutch painting, so it is no surprise that some of the country’s best museums and galleries are located here. The city has had its share of famous residents: Rembrandt was born here; Jan Steen painted here; and Albert Einstein taught here.
Leiden is a very walkable city and has maintained a small-town atmosphere. Visitors enjoy a variety of ethnic restaurants, cozy cafés, bookshops, an outdoor market held twice a week, shopping in a pedestrian precinct, as well as banks, ATMs and several large supermarkets.
There is much to do and see in Leiden, but remember that all of the Netherlands is just at your doorstep: Amsterdam is only 30 minutes by train, Delft 20 minutes, Utrecht 45 minutes, Brussels and Brugge in Belgium 2.5 to 3 hours.
And in case you wondered…yes, Leiden also has a windmill, which is now a fascinating museum.
"Many of my friends with whom I shared my diary noticed that I really thought it was my best trip to Europe - and the Untour way is the best way. Lenneke's orientation is so well done that you need only to relax and go in any direction you want each day. I would recommend this Untour to anyone." - T. Badkins
Customer comments about Frans Hals, Leiden, Holland - Leiden
"We liked the large size, separate bedroom, great natural light and view over canal. Kitchen was small but adequate for simple cooking. Overall very quiet... no problems!" Thorley C. Mills, Jr.
"Our apartment worked out well. We were sorry that we didn't have a real oven, but that wasn't a big deal. We liked being on the top floor." Ruth Worden
"We loved the large windows with a great view and so much light. It was also very quiet and relaxing." Lance Thornton
"All in all, I was most pleased with the Frans Hal apartment" Joann Porter
"We loved the view of the canal and bridge from our upstairs backroom." Jacob & Lila Korvink
"My first impression was that this apartment was spartan, and it was, but we found that it provided all that we needed. It was nice to be in the same building with the other Untourists. We were able to visit and share experiences and supplies. The steps were difficult to maneuver on arrival and leaving with the bags." Karen Yost
"The Frans Hals was more than adequate for two persons, and quiet, and sunny. The reference materials excellent! Transportation was wonderful. The town was delightful." Mary Hamlin
"The apartment was great." Suzanne Kincaid
"Great apartment. Apartment was light, airy and clean, with plenty of room. Balcony nice for wine before dinner." Vance & Marilyn Hall
"Big, huge windows, sunny, quiet, adequate kitchen & bathroom, loved having the fan for hot days, good access to bus & grocery & bakery." Dave & Susan Gras
"The apartment was clean, modern, spacious and light-filled, the best yet. We ate all breakfasts and 3 dinners here and entertained our friends from the Van Gogh apartment at each meal. Well stocked, too." Thomas A. Watrous
"Our apartment was comfortable and provided everything we needed during our stay. It's a bit spartan and low on charm, considering it is student housing. We enjoyed the outdoor patio on sunny days." B. & P. Bauer
"Great location and very comfortable! Clean, well-stocked for cooking, which we really appreciated." Beth Hollowbush
"Enjoyed the view of the canal - always someone passing by - and the rooftop terrace in the evening." Ann Cricchi
"I though Leiden was the perfect "home base" to explore all areas of the Netherlands." Rebecca Raines Bridges

An Explanation of the Ratings: The first column of figures is the highest score possible in each category. The column on the far right is the score for this particular apartment in this category. For this set of ratings, we have asked every Untour staff person who has seen the apartment to rate the individual features. Many of these staff people have been in a position to hear reports (good and bad) from customers over the years, so they offer a particularly well-informed perspective. Nevertheless, customer ratings will be included in the overall ratings as soon as possible.
Please keep in mind that tastes vary. These ratings give an overall sense of how most people feel about a factor; you are in the best position to know if your tastes and requirements are likely to be in the mainstream of opinion or if you have particular needs. If you have any questions about the meaning of any of the factors rated, or about this apartment, please call our office toll-free at 1-999-868-6871.
