Duncan
From the majestic Highlands of Scotland, Duncan has been welcoming UnTour guests since 2017, bringing his profound passion for this unique region to every interaction. "I'm a very passionate person about sharing the joys of living and working in the Highlands of Scotland," he explains, taking particular satisfaction in "getting to know our guests and helping them to understand this special place, the history and the new dynamic of a modern economy."
When asked about the highlight of his destination, Duncan enthusiastically mentions storyteller Lizzie MacDougall, "she has an abundance of stories, all true of course, a very artistic lady that makes the locations in the Highlands come alive." He often requests her "back story project that involves the 'Brahan Seer'βit's a lovely wee footnote" that adds depth to the visitor experience.
Duncan's recommendations for hidden gems include "glorious low-level walks with vistas that are breathtaking, especially when the heather is in bloom," experiencing a Shinty match ("an ancient sport unique to Scotland" that Outlander fans might recognize), and attending Sheepdog trials or a Ceilidh in the local community hall. For annual events, he suggests Highland Games, local Agricultural shows, and the Feis (pronounced 'fesh'), "which comes from Gaelic and means festival. These are local to each area of the Highlands and are synonymous with arts tuition mainly for young people."
As for blending in with locals, Duncan assures visitors that "The Highlands and Highlanders are very welcoming, you may end up in casual conversation, engage in a bit of craic (banter), getting to know the locals. Very interesting and informative!" His wish is for more people to appreciate that "Beyond Loch Ness, The Highlands are filled with myths and legends, the fairy pools on Skye, the Clava Cairns. These stories add a magical touch to the landscape." And of course, he proudly notes, the region "has the only malt whisky trail in the world (Slainte Mhath - pronounced slanje Va - good health)."
