Budapest UnGuide - Hungary

With a fascinating personal history that spans dramatic political changes in Eastern Europe, Imre brings a unique perspective to his role as Budapest UnGuide, which he's held since 2021. Born in communist Romania—specifically in Transylvania—during the Ceaușescu regime, he offers visitors insights that go far beyond typical tourist information. "I am very passionate about sharing my family's firsthand experience growing up in an era many only read about," he explains. "This helps our guests understand the country they are visiting, as it had a similar past."

What Imre enjoys most about guiding UnTourists is "realizing how our UnTourists are always surprised to find Budapest one of the safest places to call their home for a week or two." His pride in the modern city that has emerged from its complicated history is evident in his enthusiasm for sharing both well-known attractions and hidden treasures.

Among his favorite lesser-known recommendations is Budapest's vibrant street art scene: "Not many know about street art in Budapest. In 2017 Hungarian and international artists launched a huge project to erect seven murals as part of an annual art festival. This tradition has continued and nowadays, the district you are going to stay has the most street art waiting to be discovered." For visitors lucky enough to be in Budapest during special events, he highly recommends experiencing August 20th, Hungary's national holiday: "It is the most beautiful day to be in Budapest with plenty of events on both sides of the Danube and a world-class firework that is celebrated by all the locals and our visitors."

Through his guidance, Imre offers UnTourists not just a view of Budapest's stunning architecture and vibrant culture, but also a deeper understanding of how history has shaped both the city and its people—adding meaningful context that transforms a simple visit into a truly enriching experience.
