Marta
A true Porto native, Marta has been sharing her hometown's magic with UnTourists since 2018, bringing her extensive tourism industry experience and local knowledge to every interaction. "I'm a curious person, passionate about my city, who loves making travel and life a little easier (and more fun!) for all the UnTourists," she explains, embodying the warm hospitality that Porto is famous for.
What Marta enjoys most about her role is "connecting travelers with the Portuguese local culture, helping them have an amazing experience." Her enthusiasm for Porto shines when she describes her favorite view: "My top highlight from Porto is watching the sunset from Jardim do Morro—there's nothing like seeing the city glow with golden light as the Douro River reflects the colors and the historic Ribeira comes alive."
For those seeking experiences beyond the typical tourist spots, Marta recommends Jardins do Palácio de Cristal—"not exactly a secret, but way less crowded than you'd expect. Incredible views over the Douro and a perfect escape from the city buzz"—and Garrafeira do Carmo, "a tiny wine shop run by locals who love sharing off-the-beaten-path Douro wines you won't find in the big wine lodges."
No visit to Porto would be complete without experiencing the city's vibrant festivals, and Marta particularly recommends the São João festival (June 23rd-24th): "This is the party of the year in Porto! Locals and visitors flood the streets, eat grilled sardines, release illuminated balloons, and gently hit each other on the head with plastic hammers. The night ends with epic fireworks over the Douro River."
To help visitors blend in with locals, Marta offers this thoughtful advice: "Portuguese culture can be more formal and reserved than some expect. Saying 'Obrigado/a'—and not 'Thanks' or 'Gracias'—and waiting your turn is very appreciated." What she wishes more people understood about her city goes to the heart of what makes Porto special: "In my opinion, Porto is more than the postcard-picture views and the world-famous wine. It's a city that moves at its own rhythm, where grandmas still chat from balconies, and every corner café or restaurant serves a good and comforting meal."
Marta believes that "travel should feel personal, warm, and inspiring—just like Porto itself." Whether visitors come for the wine, the views, or the soul of the city, she's dedicated to helping them feel like locals from the moment they arrive.## Meet Your UnGuides
