Murlo, Italy - Tuscany, Home of Il Pozzo

Murlo is a quaint, picturesque, tiny village, famous for its Etruscan past. The former bishop's palace is home to the Etruscan Museum, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts, all unearthed from a nearby hillside, Poggio Civitate. The village's existing structures were built in medieval times, and the houses form a set of defensive walls. The countryside surrounding Murlo offers some of Tuscany's prettiest natural scenery.

Murlo draws day-trip visitors. A pizzeria/trattoria in town is open in the evening. (A recent anthropological study of the descendents of the Etruscans found that the Italian whose DNA most closely matched the Etruscans is a man working at this pizzeria!) The town does not have a grocery store, but a short drive away, in Vescovado, you will find grocery shopping and a wide range of stores including a pharmacy and post office. Vescovado has a historic core but is ringed with modern, convenient stores.

Murlo is a 10-15 minute drive west of Buonconvento, about 30 minutes from Siena, and 10-15 minutes from Monteroni d'Arbia, where guests can catch a direct bus to Siena or a train to Florence. Florence is about 90 minutes by car. Other day trips from Untours’ Tuscany vacation rental apartments include the historic hill towns of San Gimignano, Pienza, Montepulciano and San Galgano; the Etruscan sites of Volterra, Chiusi and Cortona; the natural beauty of Mt. Amiata and the coast; and the monasteries of Monte Oliveto and Sant’Antimo.
