Montalcino, Italy - Tuscany, Home of Piazza
Montalcino is a beautiful hill town, sporadically populated in Etruscan times and permanently settled around 1000 AD. The town was important in medieval times and its thirteenth-century walls are still largely intact. Today Montalcino is known for the Brunello wine made in its surrounding farmlands. Its center is pedestrian-friendly and walkable. Its narrow streets are lined with shops, good restaurants, lively cafés and wine bars. It hosts an open-air market on Fridays and offers a museum of sacred art. Visitors to the town’s fourteenth-century fortress can climb its tower for a spectacular view of the countryside or sample local wines in its basement cantina. The town offers banks, ATMs, coffee bars, a grocery store and a good bakery.
Staying in the countryside outside Montalcino puts you in the heart of the Tuscan wine belt, in the shadow of countless wineries and an easy drive to Chianti country. Traditional farm life continues in Montalcino and the many beautiful hill towns that surround it. Here, artisans sell pottery, small restaurants create traditional Tuscan meals, and old parish churches hide stunning frescoes.
Montalcino is about 40 minutes south of Siena and an 90 minutes south of Florence.
Other day trips from Untours’ Tuscany vacation rental apartments include the historic hill towns of San Gimignano, Pienza, Montepulciano, and San Galgano; the Etruscan sites of Volterra, Chiusi, and Cortona; the natural beauty of Mt. Amiata and the coast; and the monasteries of Monte Oliveto and Sant’Antimo.
Customer comments about Piazza, Montalcino, Italy - Tuscany
"Breathtaking view from the balcony and a perfect location in town. Garage parking was SO nice." Joseph Bailey
"The location was fantastic. It was a perfect spot to observe village life in a relatively small commune. The apartment had every amenity you could hope for. But be warned- The apartment is virtually under the bell tower which rings 24 hours a day. Angela and Marco were very gracious and helpful." Ken Ritchie
"Everything in your description of apartment was reliable, as we would have expected from Untours. As noted there, the Piazza could be noisy at times--and we wanted that--it was the centerpiece of a community. Reserved parking--distance noted but not the steep climb! But that's part of Montalcino. Our hostess was friendly and helpful, far beyond anything reasonable; for example, we had forgotten handicap parking sticker; son mailed it to her, and we met her. Charming, such that Martha (portrait painter) will be doing soon a sepia one of the daughter." Charles Lower
"The apartment was very clean and comfortable. The owner and her family are wonderful people - very attentive and kind." Mari Reyes
"The apt. took us by surprise: It was much nicer than the pictures show. It has been thoroughly 'modernized'. And the view from the terrace was the best in all Tuscany!" Richard & Ardeth Hines
"Great apartment. I felt very at home. It was much better than I ever expected but summer evenings on the piazza can be loud." Amy DeGirolomo
"We liked being able to be part of the village life in Montalcino and observe firsthand the day to day activities of the villagers." Ed & Kathy Patience
"The best thing about the Untour was the apartment - it's views and location." Mr and Mrs Gerald Wait
