Oaxaca, the cultural epicenter of Mexico

Get immersed in the historical and gastronomical heaven

Experience the Mexican ancient cultures like a local

Mexico’s diversity is unmatched in Latin America, a vibrant tapestry woven from ancient civilizations, rich traditions, and a cuisine that’s as varied as its landscapes. From the pristine white sands of the Caribbean and the mysterious cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula to the lush waterfalls of Chiapas and the youthful Parícutin volcano, Mexico’s natural beauty is as captivating as its culture.

In the south, Oaxaca stands out as one of Mexico’s most culturally rich states. With roots dating back to 11,000 BC, Oaxaca is a cradle of heritage—birthplace of corn and squash, home to mezcal, and keeper of Monte Albán, a pre-Hispanic archaeological marvel untouched by colonial hands. This region is famed for its craftsmanship, from whimsical alebrijes to burnished black clay pottery and handwoven wool rugs, each piece a testament to Oaxaca’s artisanal soul.

Your UnTour centers in Oaxaca de Juárez, the state’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city brimming with culture, history, art, and flavor. Here, life unfolds in colorful festivals, lively markets, and the unforgettable tastes of Oaxacan cuisine. Beyond the city, nature’s wonders await—like Hierve el Agua, one of only two petrified waterfalls on Earth, and Monte Albán, where ancient stories whisper through well-preserved ruins.

Settle into a thoughtfully vetted apartment in Oaxaca de Juárez and let UnTours take care of the details. Stay for a week or longer and experience the rhythm of Oaxaca—its traditions, its landscapes, and its unforgettable people.

Day trips: Monte Alban, Hierve el Agua, Teotitlan del Valle, San Bartolo Coyotepec, Lake area of Huayapam, Mitla and more.

Arrival at the airport in Oaxaca and private transportation to your apartment

¡Bienvenido! Welcome to Oaxaca, Mexico—a vibrant cultural and culinary hub unlike any other. You’ve arrived in a place where ancient civilizations have shaped one of the most culturally rich regions in the world.

When you land, a private driver will be ready to greet you and whisk you away to your apartment. It’s the perfect chance to share your first impressions with a local as you take in the surroundings. In less than half an hour, you’ll be settling into your home for the week (or longer!), ready to soak in the rhythms of Oaxaca. Your adventure begins here.

Visit a local market as locals do

Think you’ve seen your fair share of local markets? Oaxaca’s Mercado 20 de Noviembre and Mercado Benito Juárez might just change your mind. These bustling markets are where Oaxacans shop daily, surrounded by vibrant colors, enticing aromas, and a dazzling array of local goods. You’ll find fruits you’ve never encountered before, vegetables in every shape and size, and spices that define the essence of Oaxacan cuisine.

And the food? That’s a reason to visit all on its own. At Mercado 20 de Noviembre, the famed pasillo de humo (smoke alley) is a feast for the senses—and for your appetite. Your UnGuide will help you navigate the tempting options, from smoky meats to must-try dishes like the beloved tlayuda, often called the Oaxacan pizza.

Wandering these markets isn’t just shopping—it’s a deep dive into Oaxacan culture. Every corner reveals a new story, a new flavour, and a glimpse into daily life here.

Monte Alban pre-hispanic archaeological site guided visit

The Maya were one of the ancient civilizations that left a profound mark on Mesoamerica, and Oaxaca is no exception. You’ll have the chance to explore one of the most well-preserved Maya archaeological sites, left untouched by the Spanish, allowing it to remain remarkably intact.

Monte Alban, located near the historic center of Oaxaca de Juárez—a UNESCO World Heritage site—is just a 30-minute drive from the city center. Your UnGuide will be there to help you make the most of your visit to this extraordinary historical site. Discover the remarkable achievements of this ancient civilization and uncover the secrets of the Maya.

Alebrijes art workshop

What are Alebrijes? If you’ve seen Disney’s Coco, you’ve already had a glimpse of these fantastical creations. If not, don’t worry—you’re about to dive right in. Alebrijes are brightly coloured, dreamlike creatures brought to life by Pedro Linares, a talented Oaxacan artist. Inspired by a vivid dream, Pedro’s work captured the attention of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, who became devoted admirers. Over time, these whimsical figures gained fame, and Pedro was awarded Mexico’s prestigious National Prize for Arts and Sciences in recognition of his craft.

With your UnGuide, you’ll visit an Alebrije workshop, where you’ll hear the fascinating stories behind these creations and get to try your hand at the intricate work of a local artisan. It’s a creative journey into Oaxacan tradition, with plenty of colour, culture, and inspiration along the way.

Traditional Oaxacan cooking lesson

Oaxacan cuisine stands out as one of Mexico’s most iconic, celebrated for its variety, rich spices, and unforgettable flavours. During this hands-on cooking lesson, you’ll explore the roots of Oaxacan gastronomy with a local cook as your guide. Together, you’ll prepare traditional dishes like the yellow mole tamale, uncovering the history behind mole—a spice blend rooted in pre-Hispanic traditions.

You’ll learn the art of mixing ingredients on a comal, the ancient griddle used by the Maya, and discover the process of preparing corn, a cornerstone of the region’s cuisine. By the end, you’ll have created a delicious tamale; but you’ll also have a story to tell – one of culture, technique, and tradition brought to life in every bite.

Optional Activity: Hierve el Agua. The petrified waterfalls

Mexico’s natural landscapes are truly something to behold, and Hierve el Agua is no exception. Just an hour and a half from Oaxaca’s historic centre, and passing through the charming town of San Pedro de Mitla, lies one of only two petrified waterfalls in the world. The sight alone will leave you in awe.

Bring your swimsuit and enjoy a gentle dip in turquoise pools while taking in views of rugged mountain ranges and lush tropical forests stretching to the horizon. It’s a serene experience that feels worlds away. Speak to your Program Director for details about this optional excursion.

Every journey has its end, and today marks the final chapter of your Oaxacan UnTour. While the day is yours to explore at your own pace, your UnGuide will provide a curated list of recommendations to help you make the most of your last moments in this captivating region.
