Comfortable Apartment In Traditional House

Stay in Sintra

The Canto apartment is a comfortable accommodation located on the second floor of a traditional Sintra house above a storefront insurance office.

The apartment itself consists of two double bedrooms (facing the street), a spacious open-plan living room/dining room/kitchen, and a bathroom with a bath/shower combination. The bedrooms have double glazed windows and interior shutters. The living room has a couch that converts to a single bed. The living room has a TV with cable, including channels like CNN. Located on the corner in a bustling residential part of town, shops, cafes, and restaurants are all close at hand. Sintra, Portugal - Sintra, Home of Canto

The town of Sintra has something for everyone: decadent palaces, quiet cobblestone streets, and gorgeous parks. Its location is excellent as well because it is just a short drive or bus ride to the expansive Portuguese beaches and a direct train connection into cosmopolitan Lisbon.

Its natural beauty, pleasant climate, and proximity to the capital made it a favored resort among the nobility and the royal family. Today it is a popular tourist destination, primarily for the stately 15th century National Palace and the whimsical 19th century Pena Palace. Day visitors often miss other monuments such as the foreboding 9th century Castle of the Moors and the 19th century Monserrate Palace, a masterpiece of Moorish Revival architecture.

Central Sintra, is made up of three parts, Vila Velha, Estefânia, and São Pedro.

The Vila Velha, or old town, is the historic part of Sintra. The Palácio Nacional, a magnificent white edifice in the heart of the town, is a stunning example of a harmonious blend of architectural styles. The bustling town is literally at its doorstep. Tiny cafés serving the Sintra specialty, queijadas, delicious cheese cakes, and hot coffee abound, and there are a maze of quaint streets to meander. The old town is close to several other major areas of interest, including the Moorish castle perched on the hill overlooking Sintra, the stunning Pena Palace, and the lush, unique gardens of Monserrate.

The São Pedro quarter is close by and is best known for its bimonthly Sunday market. This market sells fresh produce, cheese, meats and much more. They even sell pão chouriço, spicy sausage tucked in fresh dough and baked on an open fire. There are many restaurants in the area as well.

Estefânia is the area around the Sintra train station. Trains to Lisbon and other parts of Portugal regularly come and go. There are excellent restaurants in the area, mostly patronized by locals, and the city market has an abundance of butchers, florists and produce vendors.

Sintra has a good local bus transportation system. There are also plenty of taxis and Uber drivers.

Sintra has frequent trains to and from Lisbon’s central Rossio station . The ride takes about 50 minutes. Connections to other destinations are often made at the Entrecampos station which is about 30 minutes away. For example, Evora can be reached in about 2 hours by changing at Entrecampos.

Sintra is close to local highways making it a practical base for seeing Central Portugal for drivers as well. For example, Evora by car takes about 1 hour 45 minutes.

For those so inclined, there are plenty of hiking possibilities in and around Sintra.

★★★★★

We met Dora, the owner, when we arrived and everyone should talk to her - she is great. She took us through the apartment, explained the operation of everything, told us about markets and restaurants in the area. We have a check list to ask owners about apartments and she covered it all without having to refer to our list. The food in the apartment was great, particularity the bread and canned fish. The cork board on the wall had a map of the area, business cards for local businesses and travel info - it was a great asset. At first we thought the street noise might be distracting at night, but it was totally silent! We liked the washing machine and shower.

★★★★★

The apartment is spacious with plenty of room to unpack and settle in. Dora is the best host that we have ever had the pleasure to work with. She was always available and full of good cheer. We lacked for nothing in the apartment. Two comments about the apartment: 1.) you can hear people in the upstairs studio. It wasn't a problem because they were quiet and respectful. 2.) the busy road and roundabout could be a sleeping problem if windows were open.

We slept great!

★★★★★

Dora was great. The apartment was perfect for the two of us, but we didn't need the extra bedroom. We didn't hear any street noise at night and we slept great!

★★★★★

The location was good since there were restaurants, transportation and markets close by. The apartment had good space and was very comfortable. There were a few things lacking in the kitchen to be able to cook easily such as smaller saucepans and steak knives. A "Mr. Coffee" type coffee maker would have been nice. Our host Dora was great! She met us and explained the apartment and was readily available if we needed something. There were clean towels every three days and the bed linens were changed at the end of the first week and the apartment cleaned. There was traffic noise at night when the windows were open.
