Las Terrenas Beach Getaway

The perfect beach vacation for couples and families

Leave the All-Inclusive Resorts Behind and Experience a Beach Vacation the UnTours Way

The Dominican Republic vacation experience is often reduced to crowded resorts and generic beach packages—but it doesn’t have to be. With over 11 million travelers per year, more than half from the USA, this Caribbean nation is clearly beloved. But most visitors never see the authentic Dominican Republic. They visit overdeveloped beaches, eat at bland resort buffets, and interact with locals only in passing—usually while ordering drinks at a poolside bar.

We offer something different in Las Terrenas. This Dominican Republic travel itinerary takes you to some of the most pristine beaches in the Caribbean, nestled in a small town that remains refreshingly untouched by mass tourism. With UnTours, you’ll also enjoy unique cultural experiences, sample traditional Dominican cuisine, and explore the colonial history that shaped this island.

Las Terrenas is the ideal slow travel destination—a Caribbean beach town where vibrant local life, sustainable tourism, and the breathtaking nature of the Samaná Peninsula come together to create an unforgettable trip.

This Dominican Republic UnTour includes 7+ days in a charming beachside apartment or vacation rental in Las Terrenas. You’ll also enjoy the trusted support of our local UnGuide and a curated selection of activities and day trips—just enough help to make your visit smooth and enriching, while still giving you the freedom to travel at your own pace.

Airport arrival and transfer to Las Terrenas

Bienvenido/a a la República Dominicana! Welcome to the Dominican Republic! Your private driver will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your Las Terrenas beach rental. It’s just over a 2-hour drive through scenic mountains, quaint villages, and peaceful countryside, giving you a glimpse of the real Dominican Republic.

Arriving into Las Terranas is a real treat. The final 30 minutes of the drive includes sweeping views of the coast and the stunning mountains. You won’t want to sleep through this! Your UnGuide will meet you for an orientation session shortly after you arrive, or the following morning. Until then, it’s not that hard to navigate! The beach is within walking distance of all of our lodging options in the area. Hit the coastline and turn left along the brick-paved beach road to find the quieter and more beautiful sections, or stop for drinks or snacks at the handful of restaurants and food shacks along the way.

Hike the El Limon Waterfall and visit a local mountain community

Our usual included UnTours activity in Las Terrenas is a hike to the majestic El Limón Waterfall. The trail takes you through lush tropical forest, filled with the sounds of native birds and the rich scent of rainforest vegetation. Along the way, you’ll see vibrant orchids, towering trees, and perhaps catch glimpses of local wildlife. The hike provides an invigorating journey to the impressive waterfall itself. While the hike and waterfall are truly special, we add our unique UnTours touch by including a visit to a local village, where you’ll gain insight into the rural lifestyle in the Dominican Republic and enjoy sampling authentic traditional treats and local coffee. This combination of natural beauty and cultural connection makes for a memorable experience.

Private Caribbean Dance Lesson

You’ll hear the vibrant sounds of Caribbean music — bachata and merengue — playing from shops, homes, and streets throughout the Dominican Republic. This is a country that truly loves its music and dancing, where the rhythms are as much a part of daily life as the sun and sea. The basic steps of these two popular Dominican dances are simple enough for beginners to learn, but only practice will help you move with the effortless style of a local. Whether you’re tapping your feet or stepping onto the dance floor, experiencing bachata and merengue is a joyful way to connect with the island’s lively culture.

Enjoy one of the most picturesque beaches in the Caribbean

The rest of your week is easy. Wake up, drink some amazing local coffee, go for a morning walk on the beach, eat, relax, and maybe pop into town for some shopping or a meal. You can walk to town, but there are ample taxis or motorcycle taxis to call on if you’d prefer a ride.

Departure day

It will be the departure day, and your UnGuide will assist with anything that you need for the check out and your private driver will return you to the Santo Domingo airport.

Hasta pronto amigos y amigas! See you soon, and safe travels!

Las Terrenas

Las Terrenas is a former fishing village turned small scale tourism hot-spot due to its postcard-perfect beaches and natural wonders. Minus many of the large resorts that overwhelm beaches elsewhere on the island (and keep locals from visiting their own beaches…but that’s another story for another day), Las Terrenas is home to many boutique hotels and holiday homes, mostly catering to the European traveler.

★★★★★

I enjoyed getting to know the local people and customs. This was a new trip to the Dominican Republic. Aside from some items related to the local UnGuide company, the UnTour was profoundly amazing! Special discovery: The trail that leads to the secluded beach west of Las Terrenas beach.

★★★★

We had a great time in the Dominican Republic. Loved the historic center of Santo Domingo and Las Terrenas beaches, included excursions, and UnTour guides in both locations.

The Eco Tour at the Pachamama Farm was amazing as were farmers Nora and Paolo. We had so much to share with each other! And the lunch at the end of the tour was delicious. It was a fun day and we learned a lot! Playa Bonita was lovely (and no motorcycles!) and we found a great restaurant at the beach there.
